Inequality
The reading "Fences and Neighbors: Segregation in 21st - Century America"
and watching video on inequality called "People Like Us" made me realize and see a
lot about which social class I fit in. The video shows different
families that are from the working class to the people that
are considered to be in the rich class. However in the article "Fences and Neighbors: Segregation in 21st - Century America" John E. Farley and Gregory D. Squares stated a lot about segregation during the last three decades of the 20th century. Reseachers have incated about Blacks and Hispanics are encounter discrimination in out of every five contacts with a real estate and rental agents. I feel like this is real racial because Blacks and Hispanics might not reach the level of Whites but there's people that real hard to motviate there self to get what they needs or wants. This reading speaks that social scientists use a variety of measures to indicate about how segregated two groups are from each other. Which meaning Blacks and Hispanics have been integrated into White or racially mixed neighborhoods. Moreover, In today society I live in Harlem I see a lot of Whites moving from down town up to Harlem because they are building new condos buildings and a lot of Blacks and Hispanics cant afford it. The rent is going higher each year or each months and people are ready to move out to look for apartments that are very affordable for them to pay. I feel like it not fair nobody shouldn't be feeling down graded at all for feel like giving up. Another, example about the government trying to taking everything such as SSI, Food Stamps etc.... There's people that needs that but now a days in this society nobody does not wants to help others or be supportive.
Race & Ethnicity
In the article "Racial Stratification and education in the United States: Why Inequality Persists". The article states about black and white inequality in education are more in racial stratification and not class stratification. However, many years before the Civil rights movement whites always looked at black people of not being smart or not knowing anything because they feel that they are not educated people or feel that they shouldn't be thought. Basically black people was been known not to do so good in school. In this article it states about the study that John U. Ogbu performed showing that academically white students reviced or get better grades then black students. However, Asian students fits in as getting higher grades then both races black and whites. Moreover, more studies shows that middle class childern do better in school. In my opinon middle class students do better because their parents might always be on top of them at all times, or they just have so much opportunity and resouces. In this article it states that it don't matter if you are poverty or may not, there blackpeople that are in poverty that have did better on specialized testes then those that are or were in middle class.
In the movie "The Power Of Illusion" it showed how scientist created a experiment with one of his class based on there DNA. He wanted to show the students to see their DNA pattern to see if it would match to anyone who are from their same race. However, seeing this suprised me in a way because the results shows that you don't always have the same patterns as anybody else they are all the same race, no mattern if your Black, Asian or White we are all from the same race and have the same DNA patterns. Moreover, I find that race is just something that is created to control minority, those we dont have any power. In my opinon in today society black are sodiscriminated the most of all and some Hispanics Latinos that everything is hard for them when it come applying or getting jobs and sometime education too. I feel that they show things in this society to not make people feel like they can be succeed, plus race is just created for economic and politic purpose to put certain race down and not feeling succeed or motviated.

Deviance
Deviance is a behavior that does not confirm to basic cultural norms and expectations. An act is defined as deviant when it is marked publicly as deviant by those with enough power to enforce that designation. So we are talking about deviance when we break the norms and act different than the norms required. These are some examples of deviant acts of our everyday life.
The first example, I work at Harlem Childern's Zone however it was a monday I've came to work so late because I have got out of class so late. However It takes me at least 20 to 25 minutes to get to work depending on the train. As soon as i get off the train i stop at the store to get some food. I was making myself even more late and i have not ate anything yet. Then when I arrive to my job I just clocked in and went to my classroom I didn't even bother to stop by the office to see my supervisors. However, I called one supervisor to let him know I was running late. I arrive to my classroom here comes one of my supervisors that I do not get along with plus I have a bad vibe with. She pulls me out my classroom questioning me about why I am late? have I inform anybody that I was going to be late. I told her about my reasoning about me being late. Then she wants to switch the subject and talks about my hours I have walked away and ignored her because I felt like I didn't want to have any conversation with her. My supervisor got mad and decided she wanted to write me up but I didn't care. Then she came and informed me that I had to sign the write up sheet but I choose not to . However, I decline not to sign my name on the write up sheet. My supervisor decided to suspended me for a week.
Another example, I had a get together at my house and my friends came over to drink to have a good time. Then three of my friends stepped out in the hallway and was drinking and smoking in the hall way. The police came they felt like they were trespassing however they couldn't smoke or drink in the hall. The police officer took them to the precent I felt really bad. Then me and the rest of my friends left out my house to go to the bar down town in the city however, my friend got stopped because she had an white ice cup with liquor in it. Then the police officer decided to give her fine because in New Work you can't drink outside in public.

Sex & Gender
This article that is related to gender and sex is called " Understanding Sexual Orientation". In this article I read speaks about homosexuals and heterosexuals. It talks about the differences of a male being homosexual or heterosexuals. However, males that are homosexual normally acts more feminine then heterosexual males. In the article it stated how homosexual are well groomed and have sensitive attitude as opposed a heterosexual males. In the article it states how there's males that are engaged in homosexual activities and heterosexual activities. Moreover, males could be heterosexual or homosexual is very obvious in our society today. I find this article very interested to read because you see males that are homosexual or heterosexual in our society but the article I really found most interested was having more then one partner.
In the article "Sex in America: How Many Partners Do We Have?" states about there's people over in their thirties and older has have sex with more then one partner, however it can be five whether it happen before or after. However, in the United States they explain that marriage is liked to why people have many partners. People starts to have sexual intercourse but gets married late or just choose not to get married at all, plus more likely people would file a divorce time between marriage when they have search or met a new partner. Moreover, I can agree with all of this because today in our society you see young girls engaged in sexual activities with maybe one partner or different partner. Then leads to pregnancy or ends up catching any types of STD and now a days you don't see or hear anybody get married any more you just hear divorces going on. In today society I realize there's a lot of divorces between men and women, and as I see today you see a lot of strong independent women being a single mother and trying to maintain their self and their child and not giving up on anything or depending on any men to come around.

Socialization
In the video "A Call Of Men" it speaks about the wrong ways we determine and a expect a men to act and be even though when they are very young. Tony Porter explains in the video about how women are being looked down by men and how that can really be changed in this society. Tony Porter stated in the video how men from being young as growing up men have this "Man Box". The "Man Bow" shows and explains the ways how man should act. However, in the "Man Box" it shows and explains men shouldn't show their emotions. Also it states that men are stronger then women, moreover men are protectors they should be heterosexual and dominant. However, Tony Porter states from a young age the father's teach their son's how to be a "Man".
Another, Tony Porter stated in the video about men is that since men really has the "Man Box" it causes men to be dominant or violent. However, it causes men to sexually assault a women whenever they feel it's right to do so. Moreover, what really caught my attention in this video, when Tony Porter stated towards the end of this video that men should come up off their back and not be so aggressive the way they are now. They should show their emotions and be a little sensitive and it will change how society view women.
In the video "Killing Us Softly" Jean Kilbourne explains about how women are being advertised and seens as "objects". Jean Kilbourne explains about women are being exposed in magazines and advertisement with nice fit slim body and just trying to show society how a women body should really look. Jean Kilbourne explains more about how it affects women's self esteem and it is violent to turn a person's body to a thing or object. She states that there teenage young girls harming themselves just to look like these advertisements which they are really fake, just to persuade people to have the look so other people can love them, instead of them really loving their selves.
Jean Kilbourne also stated advertisement companies use women body to sell products and portray these women as objects. Moreover, a lot of women not focus on their own personality, it's more on their body because every women would want to have a nice body look maybe to express their selves, for example thick women maybe won't like her shape but she'll try to put in that effort to go to the gym and work out, or eat healthy diet food just to fit in so the women can have that look. Basically in many women advertisement is the way women are being viewed in this culture or society.
The video "Killing Us Softly" reminds me of the article the "Retro Wife" by, Lisa Miller it explains how Kelly Makino left her career job to take care of her husband and her two kids and just being an house wife. However, she felt that she wants to be with her kids all the time, so she can be able to raise them the right way they should be raised. Kelly Makino was always there for her kids she will always help them with their homework, cook and clean while her husband was at work. This article connects to the video "Killing Me Softly" because it shows how woman was being viewed in certain ways. However, it shows the old way of women's role in society. Moreover, women in today society are more independent, but there still some wpmen plays the role as an house wife still.
The video "Call To Men" reminds me of the article "Parents Socialization Of Children" because it explains the different ways how parents raise their kids. However, parent's are more involved in their kids life has greater expectations of their children's behavior. In the article speaks about parents being Authoritative, Permissive or Authoritarian. An Authoritative parent raises their kid strictly by in forcing rules but they are understanding and they have a good way of speaking to their children. A Permissive parent is not involved in their children lives and they don't have any part in raising their children and this causes them to be aggressive, aimless, lacking in self control etc. Finally, an Authoritarian parent demand obedience very strict about raising their kids and would go to the extreme punishments to do so.Basically this relates to the video "Call Of Men" and how Tony Porter raises his child to be a respectful child.
The two articles and videos relates to Chapter of Socialization. Women and men are being treated or known as different social institutions. It can be the culture, education, work and etc. For example, men are always being viewed the stronger person. However, in society now men are getting paid more then women. Another, there's certain sports that women can't play because it's a male sport such as football I guess they view women not having so much strength that a male has. More likely it can be education too because there women that has to stay at home watch there kids or is pregnant and can't finish education, but the males can always get there education because some feel they have no worries or responsibility to worry about.

Five Faces Of Oppression/ Milgram Experiment
In this video Milgram Experiment; It shows major point of learning the behavior. The way human would be punished by using electric shock which the learner had take. The video shows how human behave or act when is time to face a challenge situation when somebody is being told to do something that can really hurt that person. However, this experiment was done, to see if the teacher will call a stop during the test or obey the professor.
"The Five Face Of Oppression" points out the different points that oppress us. Exploitation which is the fact that people work hard and their are not getting paid by the hard work and effort they put in, in order to survive. Then Marginalization the action of excluding minorities. Powerlessness is the people who have any power for example in the United States the people who has power is the President, Government and etc.... Another, point is Culture Silence the fact that it involves taking the culture of the ruling class, establishing it as a norm. The groups that have power in society control how the people in that society interpret and communicate. Cultural Imperialism which is the fact that adopt to stereotypes in the dominant culture.
The students are exposed to one of the "The Five Face Of Oppression" is powerlessness. In this video I feel the powerlessness was more pointed out because mostly the professor tells the teacher what he has to do and the teacher has to obey by it, the teacher direct the students what they have to do however the teacher has more power then the students. As I watch the video I seen the teacher had tried to stop several times because students will just give up and they couldn't at all. Moreover, the students had to obey by what the teacher tells them to do. Through out the experience the students has been silence (Culture Silence) even they didn't have the right to talk or say anything by doing this experiment. In the video the students are some how marginalized and Milgram shows that we persuade ourselves to do something we should not do or being told to do.
This is related to chapter 5 because it explains the different points of how different powers affects us. However, this helps me understand Legitimate Power which is invoke a feeling of obligation or you are likely to carry out a boss's order to do a routine task at work. From the video the students have to obey by what the teacher told them to do and plus the teacher have the power over the students. I can relate to this because at my job the director has power over my manager. However, my manager has power over me and my other co-workers. If my manager tells me I have to do certain things I would have to obey by it no matter what because she has the power to give you a write up, suspend you or just terminate you if she wants too, that's just every where you go it's always somebody that has a power of you. Another example, the Government has the power of people because the Government can invent any new things like today in New York City the metro cards was $4.50 now it went up $5.00 and people has to obey by that and by a $5.00 metro card in order to go to work or school.

Parent Socialization And The Retro Wife
In the two article "Parent Socialization" by D. Terri Heath and "The Retro Wife" by Lisa Miller. Both authors from these two different article talks about socialization and socialization is the process through which people learn their culture, norms, values, beliefs and appropriate behaviors; this all starts from home your parents teach you these norms and you'll always carry that on with you while growing up. In the article Parent Socialization they explain the differences of each parents from different race on how they raise there kids as in punishing them for example, Mexican American mothers in the United States, mothers in both groups chose corporal punishment as their last choice of control method when their children misbehaved. Therefore, no cultural differences were apparent, meaning that Mexican American mother has there own norms/ morals on raising their kids. In the article The Retro Wife authors states about how the mothers does all the work in the house, take care and watch the kids while the father is at work. However, even if the mother was to have a job it really won't be a stable job, because the women always minimum wage the woman. In chapter six in the text book it speaks about the family and the norms/ morals, how media are showing kids certain bad influence things, but socialization all comes from what you know learn and carry on in your life while you growing up and what your parents had thaught you.

Teenage Wasteland
In this article " Teenage Wasteland " the author speaks about teens and older adults from the age of 15 years to 24 years old has been committing suicide. However, young teens and young adults would commit suicide from drug over doses, alcohol and car crashes. The author is trying to figure out what's making these teens and adults to commend suicide. In the article the author cities about "Burn Outs" which mean the drugies, drop outs and dirt bags students perhaps, the burnout's are the most that commend suicide because they barley have anything going for themselves so they just intend to give up on their life as dropping out of school and not working but just being lazy or been bullied.
The author states in the article that schools should provide students with more activities such as sports or clubs. For students can feel they have extra circular things to do instead of being depressed, stressed or doing any type of drugs and other dangerous things to commit sucicide. Futhermore, the author starts to mention about teens and adults should not give up and end their life because their's a step to everything as setting goals and if you work hard then they will become somebody in life and would keep them away from commending suicide. However, the author Gaines has use a lot of research to be able to explain her theory. She points out the key questions and explains the data that she has collected to get a better understanding of why things like this is really happening to people in their lives.

SYMBOLISM
Culture the collection of values, beliefs, knowledge, norms, language, behaviors, and material objects shared by people. For example my culture is Garifuna. Garifuna is originated from run away slaves from Africa that lend on the East coast of Honduras. Being Garifuna we are family orientated with a very strong religion, values and morals. We do a lot of celebration for weddings, funerals, birthday, carnivals and ect. One thing you can always count on are the DRUMS. The DRUMS Symbolize happiness, or sadness depending on the event. Growing up my mother took me to an awake event and they was severing coco bread and coffee. There was people there playing the drums and older woman singing and dancing to the drums beats. I felt so weird and emotional at the beginning because of the lack of not understanding but as I got older now I understand what the drums mean to the Garifuna Culture.
CULTURE WAR
Culture War is an intense disagreement about core values and moral positions. An example of culture war is demonstrated in the image. Abortion is a topic that have been argued for certain years now. On how the government feels like they have the right to control a women's reproductive system when some women are not stable to become a mother. Im pro-choice I was felt that no government should take control on a women fetus and forcing the women to keep a baby even though sometime abortion is not good because sometime a women won't be able to have a child again if she was to want to have one when she ready and it's all about life beings at conceptual.
LANGUAGE
Language is an elaborate system of symbols that enables complex communication. Garifuna a mixture of French, Arawak and Carib the language Garifuna is spoken in Honduras, Guatemala, Belize and Nicaragua and now it's being familiar to United States in New York And Texas. Garifuna originated in St. Vincent and Honduras, Guatemala, Belize and Nicaragua people communicate in Garifuna but since these countries speaks Garifuna they would speak it in a different dialect. My parents from Honduras and in the house my parents speaks Garifuna and Spanish. I speak Spanish but I don't know how to speak Garifuna but I understand a little of Garifuna when my grandparents speaks it.
MORES
Mores is norms that are strictly enforced, with potentially severe penalties for violating them. For example everyday in this world somebody is associated with drunk driving and they know the norms of drunk driving. Drinking while driving is against the law there are consequences which are maybe just paying a fine but normally be sentence in jail because they putting other people life in danger and normally the license get suspend. However, in this society there are a lot of people still drink and drive and don't care that they putting their self in danger or others.
Non Material Culture
Non Material Culture is the ideas of a culture, including values and beliefs, accumulated knowledge about how to understand and navigate the world, and standards or "norms" about appropriate behavior. For example, In my country we celebrate sweet sixteen. Sweet sixteen in my country means to them as becoming an official young lady/ women and however a sweet sixteen is very traditional in the Garifuna culture because you know everything and understanding everything. Perhaps is like knowing your norms instead of anybody telling you because your older enough to have a better understanding for everything. It's like you playing a little bit of a mother role because the mother show the daughter everything while she growing up and before turning sixteen.

Who Iam
I am Josephine Rodriguez; I am 20 years old I was born in Metropolitan Hospital Manhattan, New York City. However, I'm a very outgoing open minded person and very talkative. I speak two different languages my first language is Spanish. Spanish was the only language i knew how to speak because I was raised in my house being spoke to in Spanish. Spanish was the only language my parents spoke. English is my second I learned how to speak English in pre-school and I felt apart from the other students because they knew how to speak English but me. Although, I have picked up into speaking English so fast because i always communicated with my classmates and teacher in class. My parents are from Honduras and I'm the oldest child. I have two younger siblings my sister is 17 years old and my little brother is 11 years old. Perhaps, since I'm the oldest my siblings look up to me because, I show them that I'm a good role model to them showing them the positive things and not the negativity.
What makes the person I am today are my attitude and my personality. I am a very respectful person I don't like to be around negativity I always like to communicate with others. However, I'm a leader not follower and a good role model to the people that looks up to me. I don't allow anybody to bring me down because I'm a very strong young women. My goals in life is to graduate with a Liberal Arts Associate Degree from Borough Manhattan Community College. Then, going into a four year school and major in Ultra Sound Technician because the career job I wanna do. Moreover, I would have two kids, a husband in the future and make sure I'm stable and humble.
In the being of the semester I've read Invitation To Sociology. Basically, the article is about what sociology is; how people look into religion, ethnicity, politics, relationship and the society. However, how people think differently on the society and people needs to start to understand the society they live in. What I really see in the society I live in is different type of ethnicity a lot of discrimination going on such as upper class, middle class and lower class. Moreover, is finical because not everybody are getting paid the same; and people has a lot of responsibility when it comes to pay bills, rent, have food and clothing. Perhaps, different types of relationship such as gay marriage and how people feel that gay marriage should never been approve; cause people feel men and women was created to be together and another is religion when there are certain stereotyping in certain religion. However, I can see my biography being influenced by my personal history; because everything I've see or been through is going to carry upon me and in the future and that shows a background history of who I am as a person and I see and look up to things.
